What's the Buzz about Record Store Day??

What's all the fuss, you ask. Record Store Day is the biggest day of the year for indie record stores not just in the US but in the UK as well. Every year, in April, record labels release exclusive titles that only brick and mortar record stores can purchase and sell to our customers. these titles are first available in-store only, creating a indescribable buzz in the vinyl community. The idea started behind a group with a desire to keep the indie record store alive in this fast paced digital age.

Record Store Day, established in 2007, is an annual celebration dedicated to honoring the unique culture of independent record stores worldwide. Taking place on a designated Saturday in April (typically the third) and on Black Friday in November, this event unites fans, musicians, and countless independent record stores.

Exclusive records are pressed specifically for Record Store Day and are available only at participating stores. The event originated in the United States but has since expanded globally, with official organizers in the UK, Ireland, Mexico, Europe, Japan, and Australia.

History behind Record Store Day:
The concept for Record Store Day emerged from a brainstorming session among independent record store owners in Baltimore, Maryland, inspired by the success of Free Comic Book Day. Founded by Eric Levin, Michael Kurtz, Carrie Colliton, Amy Dorfman, Brian Poehner, and Don Van Cleave, Record Store Day has evolved into a worldwide celebration.

Beyond the annual event, Record Store Day provides ongoing support to independent record stores through promotions, marketing, and various opportunities throughout the year. The organization, managed day-to-day by the Dept. of Record Stores, in collaboration with the Coalition of Independent Music Stores and the Alliance of Independent Media Stores, advocates for the significance of independent record stores via its website, social media, and other channels. Each participating store hosts its own unique celebration, fostering connections within its local community.

Curious Collections is a Record Store Day Authorized dealer and has participated in RSD Since 2017. In 2019, we had 4 people sleep on the sidewalk and there were over 40 people in line when we opened our doors, that morning. In 2023, there were around 20 people who camped overnight and there was a line of over 300 people, wrapping around the building and into the woods when we opened the doors that morning.

What is on the list? the list changes every year and is announced roughly 2 months prior to the event. *It is important to note that Curious Collections will NOT have all of the announced RSD titles in store on Record Store Day. However, once the list is announced, we will be accepting wish lists from our customers. So follow our social accounts and check our website for more information when the list is released.

Record Store Day requires all participating stores to sign a pledge and they have very strict policies that their authorized record stores must follow. No pre-sales or holds. All RSD titles are first come, first serve. We encourage you to get here early and even camping out is just fine. Every year, we hope the weather is nice to do so and as you know, we have a large awning over the front of our store, for those of you thinking about coming the night before so that you will be the first in line. As always contact us with questions or visit our FAQ page to read more about this exciting event.
